Thanks for your comment, Rich - you certainly went above and beyond in finding the perfect ring, and I'm sure your wife loves you for it!
-- Contributed by: MayntzI proposed to my wife a few years back with a stunning platinum engagement ring. It was a really difficult but interesting process, trying to find the perfect ring. One thing I'd note to many guys out there is that doing online research can be just as good, if not better, than going to jewelry stores. The sales pressure at many of the places I went to was almost unbearable, and I was surprised to learn what I did online compared to what I learned in-store. Basically, I did stuff like this, reading people's blogs and online articles. I also went to online merchant sites and other pages that had everything from picking your ring metal, to perusing the vast number of different gem cuts out there. Like mentioned in the article, I was torn between surprising my wife and having her join me in the search/design process. I ended up getting her input here and there while searching online because I think she suspected less of me asking her opinions from my laptop versus asking her to accompany me to a jewelry store. I was able to get her thoughts and ideas to some extent by doing this, then kept to myself and finished up the process by myself. In the end we chose platinum and couldn't be happier. There are the obvious facts, like its appearance, worth and societal associations with luxury.. but there are also some random facts that I didn't know prior to my research. One of them being that the world-wide platinum supply estimate is something around being enough to fill an Olympic-sized pool up to ones ankles --- and to compare that with gold, apparently gold could fill up 3 FULL Olympic sized pools. I don't think I need to explain here why the "Rareness" factor is a hugely persuasive on! Also, and on less of a luxurious note, Platinum is hypoallergenic. If you or your significant other have sensative skin (ask your wife if her ears became infected when she first got her ears pierced.. that's one way to find out), then I would absolutely rec. Platinum as a choice ring material. My wife is mildly allergic to other precious metals, so when considering something that would be on her finger for the rest of her life, I wanted to make sure it was perfect. I could go on and on here, but just wanted to put my thoughts here for those of you who might be reading.
Also, I used engagementguide.com and preciousplatinum.com the most during my EXTENSIVE research, so I'd recommend those to you all if you need some reliable resources!
The best of luck to everyone!
Rich
