Actually, when I worked at zales we had a device that could tell if a diamond was real, and also we had a way to find out if the gold was real as well. But, we were told we could not use these devices on anyone elses jewelry. Only zales jewelry. It was used to ensure consumers what they were getting was real. Also, if trade ins brought by customers were real.

Cathy - Unfortunately, salespeople at chain jewelry stores are just that -- salespeople. While they can help you find a style you like in the budget you're interested in, you'll need to contact an appraiser or an independent, upscale jeweler for a better investigation of that ring. Most jewelers do stamp the gold karat value in the ring, and some more expensive rings may have the manufacturer's stamp as well, though to the best of my knowledge Zales Jewelry does not do that. I'd recommend getting an appraisal of the ring and the stone to ascertain its value so you can be certain. Best of luck!

Hi, I have an engagement ring with one large diamond in the middle and five small ones going down each side. Inside the ring it is stamped zales and 14k. The ring looks like a copper or brassy color. I ask a sales person at zales if they stamp there rings inside. I was told no. The big diamond is held in by six prongs.I also asked if it was real gold and diamonds. The sales person told me he did not know. I thought the sales people would at lest know how to tell if it was real?
