Adam - There is no way to tell whether that is a fair price for that specific ring without comparing it to other rings with similar quality stones, designs, and workmanship. I'd suggest you get more detailed information on the ring and then compare it to similar designs to see what might be the better deal for your budget and the ring's quality.

Richard -- First, you might want to consider whether you are the Right Age to Get Engaged; it all depends on your relationship, of course, but you don't want to rush into anything. As for the prices of engagement rings, there are a number of articles here that talk about cheaper options that can fit in tighter budgets: Affordable Engagement Rings, Cheap Engagement Rings, Discount Engagement Rings, Cost Cutting Engagement Ring Tips, and How Much to Spend on an Engagement Ring. You could also consider Birthstone Engagement Rings -- they're lovely options that are generally less expensive than diamond rings. Another option for you may be Diamond Promise Rings that are less expensive and more appropriate for your relationship. Best wishes!

Maria -- The cost of wedding rings varies depending on a lot of factors, such as how big they are (width), if there are any diamonds or gemstones in them, if they're designer styles or not, textural details, the karat value of the gold, etc. Your best bet is to find a style that you like and then investigate what the costs of similar styles are by comparing between different jewelers. Some beautiful gold wedding bands can cost as little as $50, while high end diamond bands can cost thousands.

how much do wedding rings cost?

Jay - Your best bet would be to visit a local jeweler and see what they have available. The idea of what is "overpriced" varies for each buyer, and it really depends on how comfortable you are with your budget. You can also browse online retailers for ideas and use their prices as a comparison to local stores to see where you might find the best deal. If you're concerned about fraud and the ring not being accurately described, I'd stay away from online auctions, pawn shops, and other used rings unless they come with a certificate and other verifiable documentation. What are some good places to look for an engagement ring where I can feel reasonably assured that:

  1) the ring is what they say it is, and
  2) the ring isn't too overpriced

Any guidance you may provide would be great.

Matt - You should spend what you are comfortable with on an engagement ring. Some very beautiful rings can be found for less than $500, depending on the intricacy of the style, the type of metal, and the carat wieght of the diamonds. Many people assume that two months' salary is appropriate, but that is just a misconception. For example, if you have a great deal of student loan debt and other financial committments, it may be best to buy a smaller ring. The price tag is far less important than what the ring represents -- a caring, loving woman will recognize that you do love her no matter what size or price ring you buy. (If she insists on a certain price, however, it may be a warning sign or you may need to save up first before committing to an engagement.)
