Traditionally, the bride's family has paid for engagement pictures. However, like many other wedding costs today, often the couple may choose to split the cost or ask their families to split the cost. While engagement photos are not a requirement, they are a cherished memento for many couples and are useful for those who will place formal newspaper announcements.

Very good point Laura, thanks for sharing! With some investigation, it is possible to find a photographer who can do a wide range of photo styles both for the engagement and the wedding.

I'd also like to point out that a lot of professional photographers specialize in candid photography as well, so it's not an either/or situation. More and more professional engagement sessions are focusing on this style as a way to capture true emotions and expressions. Because of how quickly faces change, candid photos can be difficult without using the correct equipment. Having professional engagement portraits taken is also invaluable in the experience you have with your photographer. Typically this is the same photographer who will be taking photos during your wedding, so it pays to have extra experience in getting to know each other and be able to relax with him/her/them. They will become familiar with your expressions, interactions, preferences, and overall style and will be able to better capture these on the wedding day.

Thanks for sharing, though many photographers today do call "engagement pictures" photos of the couple or either individual, while "bridal portraits" are more of a test run for just the bride-to-be in her full regalia; many newspapers use the bridal portraits for announcements instead. Lots of photos to take!

Exactly the opposite, traditionally the engagement photo is just of the bride, as it is used to announce (both in the press and to friends and family) that she will be married. In historical context, it was important for families to announce their daughters coming of age to be married (Debut) and their upcoming nuptials. People didn't really care about the boys! It was ok for them to be bachelors!
