Lo,
If the appraisals for the rings are accurate, then the difference in value could be attributed to other factors that affect the value of the ring - specifically, the cut, color and clarity. So, if a diamond is large, but has many flaws and poor color, it can be worth much less than a smaller, more perfect stone.

-- Contributed by: LoWhat is best in terms of karats (and carats) depends on your personal preferences as well as your budget. Higher diamond sizes and gold purities are more expensive, though they may be more impressive as well if that's what you're interested in. I'd suggest you examine a variety of different styles to see which looks best to you.
-- Contributed by: MayntzHi Miles, You may be mixing up your karats and your carats. A carat is a measure of weight, used for gemstones. Diamonds are weighted with this measurement system.
On the other hand, a karat is a measure of the purity of gold. 24 karat is pure gold (which is very soft), 18 karat is about 3/4 gold (blended with other metal) and 14 karat is slightly over half gold.
