Thanks for the tip, Rick. You are right, getting a diamond report is a really useful way to make sure that you are getting what you are paying for.
-- Contributed by: K PullenGreat article! I've been doing a ton of research on engagement rings, and I wanted to add that the best way to make sure that you're getting a quality stone is by getting a GIA diamond grading report. GIA is a non-profit gemological institute that is dedicated to maintaining consumer confidence in the diamond industry. You actually can't judge the 4Cs of a diamond with the naked eye... it has to be done in a laboratory. GIA is the only unaffiliated, non-profit diamond certification company out there, and it invented the industry standards, so ask your jeweler to see the GIA diamond grading report before you purchase a diamond engagement ring!

-- Contributed by: K PullenI would argue that it's just as important to get a quality metal as it is to get a quality stone... I personally would suggest investing in platinum for her engagement ring. It won't lose metal, because scratches on platinum only relocate the metal, and it's naturally white, so it won't need to be redipped. To me, it seems well worth it to pay a little more for the most durable precious metal and know that it will last a lifetime.

The above statement is blatantly incorrect. Platinum is much more rare and expensive than Titanium.
For a relative comparison of the raw metal prices comparing the same amount of each metal... 1/20 of an ounce of Platinum will cost close to $100.00......1/20 of an ounce of Titanium will cost approx .05 cents

-- Contributed by: brianIt's true that some round stones are more expensive than different diamond shapes, particularly with hefty carat weights, because they are far more readily available it is easier for a couple to find an inexpensive round diamond engagement ring than one of a more unique shape.
-- Contributed by: MayntzIt is a common error to assume that Round Diamonds are a cheaper stone shape. Quite to the contrary, they are more expensive because we generally have a lower yield from a piece of rough when cutting a round versus cutting a rectangular shape, for example due to the natural shape of a diamond crystal. Therefore, the price per carat of a round brilliant diamond is usually higher than that of a Radiant cut diamond for instance. Furthermore, by selecting a trademarked stone such as one from Hearts on Fire, you will increase the price per carat even further.
