John is right -- going slightly higher in size is easier to adjust than a smaller size; plus, she'd still be able to wear it until it is taken in for resizing.

That's a tricky one Pat.

According to the guys at TheDiamondBuyingGuide.ca it is better to buy a ring that is slightly bigger rather than slightly smaller. It is indeed easier to resize the ring afterwards if it's bigger than her finger as opposed to resizing it from a smaller size.

This is pretty good info.

Pat - If there is no ring you can use as a guide, I'd suggest not worrying about the size and instead concentrate on choosing a fabulous ring she'll adore. With her height and weight, she ought to be able to wear any ring in a standard size from the jeweler (usually a 6 or 7 ring size), though even that may be a bit large. After you propose (and hopefully she accepts!) you can have the ring resized for her finger. While naturally you want to be able to slip it on her hand and have it fit perfectly, I'm sure she'll be surprised and thrilled no matter what if you take care to find a ring that suits her style. Best wishes!

How can I know what size to buy when I want to surprise her and she has no rings I can use as a guide - what size should I buy - she is about 5ft 4in. - 115 lbs.
