Vintage Style Ring Settings
From LoveToKnow EngagementRings
Vintage style ring settings are perfect for anyone looking for a ring that's a little bit out of the ordinary.
Common Vintage Style Ring Settings Designs
Although vintage engagement rings are as varied as modern ring settings, there are several common styles.
- Victorian – Jewelry designs during the Victorian era varied widely. Most Victorian engagement rings were made out of yellow gold or rose gold. Since mining diamonds were extremely scarce during this time period, Victorian style engagement rings often had other precious gemstones surrounded by smaller diamonds.
- Edwardian – If you are looking for an Edwardian engagement ring, the metal must be platinum (though white gold is a great substitution and far less expensive). The settings were often intricate and highly detailed. The diamonds placed in the Edwardian settings were generally rose cut diamonds.
- Art Deco – During this time period, ring settings became simpler than during the previous era of fancy filigree and intricate lace patterns. Asscher, emerald and marquis cut diamonds were most popular for Art Deco engagement rings.
Vintage Style Stone Settings
When choosing a vintage style ring, the cut of the stone often dictates the setting. If you haven't yet decided on the cut of your engagement ring stone, here are a few details about different types of stones setting from which to choose:
- Victorian - During the Victorian age, Tiffany & Co. introduced their now classic diamond solitaire in a six prong setting. It was definitely more simply designed than the other popular rings of this era, but unlike other Victorian style settings that have fallen out of favor, the six prong Tiffany setting remains popular today.
- Edwardian – The cut of a diamond during the Edwardian period varied, the most common diamond cuts being brilliant, European, and old mine cut. No matter what cut, the diamond was often surrounded by channel set diamonds or precious gemstones. The Edwardian ring setting also often featured pave or channel set diamonds down the shank of the ring.
- Art Deco - The four prong brilliant cut setting was the most popular for Art Deco era rings. These rings often featured round brilliant cut diamonds, so the four prong setting was perfect.
Finding Vintage Style Ring Settings
Authentic vintage style rings are best found at auction or a jeweler specializing in vintage rings. These rings are often very delicate and, depending on the stone and the metal, very expensive. Many couples who love the vintage style, but not the vintage price tag are turning to vintage ring reproductions. Fortunately, many companies offer true vintage rings as well as lovely reproductions and vintage-inspired rings.
- Fay Cullen – Well known and extremely reputable, Fay Cullen offers an astounding variety of vintage rings at extremely reasonable prices.
- Sylvia's Antiques – Shop by either time period or decade at Sylvia's Antiques to find engagement rings that range from under $1,000 to $9,000, though the majority of the rings fall in the $1,000 to $3,000 range.
- Antique Jewelry Mall – You can find just about every vintage style ring setting at the Antique Jewelry Mall. You also have your choice of purchasing a ring with a stone mounted or just the setting.
- Affordable Vintage Jewelry – If you aren't all that into diamonds for your engagement ring, check out the vintage rings at Affordable Vintage Jewelry.
Choosing vintage style ring settings for your engagement ring is an excellent way to reflect your personal style and tastes. Choosing a ring with a timeless design helps to ensure a few things: First, that it will be very unlikely that you will see the same design on another bride-to-be's finger and second, that the ring will never go out of style and look outdated. Many vintage engagement rings reflect those timeless and classic designs that survive decades of trends and fads.
