Unique Alternative Wedding Rings
From LoveToKnow EngagementRings
There are many unique alternative wedding rings available for couples who want to symbolize their commitment to one another but who aren’t interested in the classic wedding band.
Why Go Alternative?
While the vast majority of the population prefers the perennial classic gold wedding band, there are many reasons why a couple might choose a unique alternative ring instead.
- Expense: Even a simple, thin wedding band can cost $100 or more, and bands with multiple diamonds or more unusual metals may cost thousands of dollars. Alternative rings, on the other hand, can be found that cost much less but are no less meaningful.
- Environment: Green lifestyles are becoming more and more popular, and wrapping a small amount of precious metal around one’s finger has no practical purpose other than to deplete resources. Choosing a more environmentally friendly ring is a great unique alternative.
- Politics: While many countries are seeking to prevent the trade of blood diamonds and conflict diamonds, there are still rebel groups that profit from illicit diamond sales. Choosing an alternative ring prevents this.
- Profession: Some professions, such as athletes, mechanics, doctors, or actors, may be unable to wear traditional wedding bands. Choosing a more unique alternative lets the couple honor their commitment without compromising the career.
- Anti-Commercialism: Some individuals see the commercialism of engagements and weddings – expensive jewelry, clothes, parties, etc. – as the propagation of a cliché lifestyle and societal expectations rather than a true romantic commitment. Choosing unique alternative wedding rings is a great way to honor one another without succumbing to the expectations of the big white wedding.
Options for Unique Alternative Wedding Rings
Depending on why a couple wants to investigate non-traditional wedding rings, there are many different styles they can consider.
- Rings made from more unique materials, such as wood wedding rings, multi-tone rings, mokume gane rings, or whole mineral rings such as jade, coral, or hematite bands.
- Rings made from recycled materials such as old heirloom rings or other pieces of jewelry.
- Fake rings such as celebrity replica rings, costume jewelry, or even fun options such as candy ring jewelry.
- Mood rings or other nostalgic designs such as figural rings or puzzle rings.
- Non-finger rings, such as toe rings or tongue rings.
- Cultural designs including Celtic wedding rings, claddagh rings, Jewish rings, or Hawaiian rings.
- False rings such as tattoos of bands around the finger.
Another option couples may choose is to avoid rings altogether but opt for a different matching symbol. These types of alternatives may include:
- Matching name, date, or heart tattoos.
- Splitting a heart-and-key pendant set.
- Choosing matching key rings or other personal items that are likely to be carried frequently.
- Planting a tree together.
Finding Alternative Rings
Many retailers offer alternative ring designs for couples interested in something more unique than the traditional gold or platinum wedding band. To find the perfect retailer, couples should first decide which type of rings or other tokens they are interested in and then research for reputable merchants who can meet their needs.
A Word About Nostalgia
Choosing a unique alternative ring may at first be exciting and memorable, but couples should carefully consider the implications of nostalgia and sentimentality before they disregard the popularity of classic wedding rings. While a unique ring may seem like the perfect choice today, many designs are not as durable and long-lasting as metal bands. Furthermore, couples who choose very specialized alternative designs may grow to regret that decision as their tastes, preferences, and even their relationship may change in years to come.
Unique alternative wedding rings can be beautiful options for unique couples who want to make a personal, dramatic statement with their choice of wedding jewelry. While such alternatives are not suitable for every couple, they can be a fun way to customize wedding symbolism to perfectly match the couple’s unique relationship.
Comments
I think with the escalation in price for precious metals and the declining economy, it is only smart for loving couples to find alternatives. New metals like Titanium and Tungsten Carbide will last for longer and look better at a fraction of the price.
