Tungsten Engagement Rings

From LoveToKnow EngagementRings

With exceptional strength and burnished white beauty, tungsten engagement rings are growing more and more popular, particularly for men. Before choosing this hard-to-find option, however, couples need to decide whether the added characteristics are also worth the added cost.

About Tungsten

Tungsten (also called wolfram) is a pure transition metal element, and when combined into alloys with carbon and nickel, is one of the hardest metals used in the jewelry industry – ten times harder than 18k gold, and more than quadruple the strength of titanium.

Tungsten’s desirability is compounded by its rarity: it is only found in isolated mines in China, Bolivia, Russia, Vietnam, and a few other locations. While the mines are able to supply generous quantities of the metal, it is principally used for light bulb filaments, aircraft and ship construction, integrated circuits, and milling tools, all of which are heavy consumers of the metal and its alloys. It is only in recent years that tungsten has been adapted for jewelry use, creating heavy and durable rings that are ideally suited for men’s engagement and wedding rings.

Types of Tungsten Engagement Rings

Because of its extreme strength, tungsten can be difficult to work to create intricate design details, and the most commonly available rings are tungsten bands. While that may initially sound limiting, there are a number of different designs available, including:

  • Hammered bands with textured ripples or geometric patterns across the entire surface.
  • Multi-tone bands with a tungsten core surrounded by platinum, titanium, or gold.
  • Wide or narrow bands with textured, grooved, or angled edges.
  • Bands inset with flush-setting diamonds or other gems.
  • Polished or matte metal rings.

Because the metal can be difficult to work, elaborate settings and filigrees are not found in tungsten rings, though several manufacturers have experimented with tension settings that utilize the metal’s extreme strength.

Where to Buy Tungsten Engagement Rings

Because other precious metals are easier to craft into rings, more readily available, and generally less expensive, it can be difficult to find tungsten rings. Independent designers may offer a limited supply of tungsten designs, but because the metal cannot be readily resized, it must be specially ordered to suit each individual’s ring size. The best place to buy tungsten jewelry is through the internet, and online jewelers often have a wide selection of available designs to choose from.

Before buying an engagement ring online, investigate the jeweler thoroughly including their service and repair abilities, refund policies, and any potential customer complaints.

Tungsten rings are typically more expensive than their gold or platinum counterparts; a plain tungsten band can cost up to $800 or more, and more elaborate designs can easily cost over $1,000.

Care and Concerns

Tungsten engagement rings are incredibly scratch-resistant, making them excellent choices for individuals with active lifestyles who don’t want to remove their rings frequently. On the other hand, that durability can be misleading: unlike softer rings that may bend or warp when subjected to stress, tungsten is more likely to be fractured and is far less able to be repaired. Tungsten cannot be effectively engraved, and attempting this type of customization can void any sales warranties as well as irreparably damage the ring.

Tungsten is a high-quality, high-durability metal, and while it is more frequently used for men’s wedding rings, tungsten engagement rings are becoming more readily available. With a rich silver luster and heavy weight, the strength of tungsten is immediately apparent and is the perfect way to symbolize the strength of a couple’s relationship.

Comments

I cannot agree more about choosing Tungsten-Carbide for your wedding ring. Not only will it last forever, it is weighty and a constant reminder of your life long commitment. I helped my brother pick out a pair of Triton wedding bands. They are really something else. Pass it on.
