Surprise Proposals

From LoveToKnow EngagementRings

Surprise proposals can be a fun way to pop the question, but it takes more to make a successful surprise marriage proposal than just an unexpected question.

Surprise proposals can be a gamble.

Why a Surprise?

Surprises can be fun, and many men choose to surprise their fiancées-to-be so they can witness that once in a lifetime moment of sheer wonder and awe as she comprehends just what the question is asking. Surprise proposals are also a way to be very spontaneous and genuine because they may not be as carefully staged and anticipated as a more traditional proposal. To really pull off the surprise, however, can take a surprising amount of work.

What Shouldn’t Be a Surprise

Even while the timing and setup of this all important question may be a surprise, the idea of a marital commitment should never be a surprise for the prospective bride-to-be. Before getting engaged, a couple should always discuss their relationship and their plans for the future, including finances, family plans, religious beliefs, and other factors that can impact a happy marriage. By understanding that marriage is more than a ring, a couple can be well prepared for their engagement even if the proposal is a complete surprise.

Ideas for Surprise Proposals

There are many ways to arrange a spontaneous, unexpected, creative proposal. Popular options include:

  • Jewelry Stores: Many couples will shop together for an engagement ring, even if the plan is only for the bride-to-be to offer hints about her preferred engagement ring designs. Why no surprise her by buying the ring on the spot and proposing right at that moment?
  • Misdirection: When a guy hints that a girl should prepare for a special evening, she may immediately begin to think that this will be the night he proposes. Instead of making her wait, however, a romantic lunch proposal can be a wonderful surprise and the couple can use the evening’s events to celebrate their new engagement.
  • Vacations: Proposing on vacation is easy to arrange as a surprise because there are many other activities and sights to see that can help keep the lucky lady distracted so she doesn’t notice the preparations for the proposal.
Will she be surprised?
  • Grand Scale: A grand scale proposal using a television commercial, billboard, radio announcement, or sporting event may be an outrageous option, but it is sure to be a surprise as well.
  • Alternative Grooms: Enlist a close friend’s aid to pop the question for you, complete with a traditional marriage proposal on bended knee, but instead of saying “will you marry me” they say “will you marry (insert groom’s name).” Meanwhile, the groom-to-be is nearby to complete the surprise.
  • Surprise Visits: If a couple has a long distance relationship, an unexpected visit is the perfect way to ask the question that is better posed face-to-face.
  • Role Reversals: If a couple has talked about marriage and is ready to take that leap, the bride-to-be can get a jump on the surprise by popping the question to her prospective groom, complete with a men’s engagement ring.
  • Fake Outs: Similar to a misdirection, a man could hint that tonight will be special, only to surprise his beloved with a more casual, laid back affair. She may be momentarily disappointed because it’s not what she envisioned for a marriage proposal, but when he pulls out that diamond engagement ring she’ll be surprised and happy.
  • Photo Booths: A great way to capture surprise marriage proposals is to pop the question in an instant photo booth. Appropriately timed, the delayed pictures are the perfect way to record the shock, surprise, and elation of such an unconventional proposal.
  • Practical Jokes: A daring groom-to-be may be able to arrange a practical joke proposal by enlisting his girlfriend’s boss, family members, or friends to help set up the joke. Classic scenarios include being pulled over by the police who happen to find something “suspicious” in the car (the ring), or being “fired” by the boss for celebrating at work for the proposal that is seconds away.
  • Surprise Weddings: For a couple interested in eloping, arranging a surprise wedding at the moment of the proposal is a daring and unique option. The hopeful groom would need to get close family members and friends together beforehand as well as to arrange for a marriage license and officiant, but the happy moment of a “yes” answer can quickly morph into a lifelong “I do” if it is right for the couple.

Pulling Off the Surprise

Surprise proposals need superb coordination to be pulled off successfully. Enlisting assistants may be required, and they should be able to keep secrets and improvise to keep the prospective bride from suspecting what is about to happen. Details must be carefully coordinated so they do not arouse suspicion, and the plans should be flexible to accommodate any unexpected changes.

At the same time, a surprise marriage proposal is not for everyone. A woman who cherishes classical romance may prefer a more romantic proposal, and trying to force a surprise for this important question can have unexpected and unwanted results when the answer is a surprise as well.

Surprise proposals can be a fun way to ask for that someone special’s hand in marriage, but they need careful planning and consideration to be memorable, romantic moments the couple will share for a lifetime.
