Scatter Set Diamond Rings
From LoveToKnow EngagementRings
Scatter set diamond rings are stunning alternatives to traditional multi-stone engagement ring designs. Subtly engineered and discreetly positioned, the flair of a scatter setting is sure to be eye-catching.
What is a Scatter Setting?
Scatter settings are minimalist contemporary engagement ring designs that feature multiple stones in unconnected arrangements. Unlike bridal sets, three stone rings, and other designs using several stones, scatter set diamond rings use stones that are literally “scattered” across the surface of a ring instead of positioned together as a single focal point. The diamonds may be set into the ring in several different ways:
- Flush Settings: Flush set diamonds are positioned so the stone’s girdle (the widest part of the stone) is level with the metal surface of the band.
- Bezel Settings: Bezel set diamonds are encircled by a small ring of metal, which is then set into the band to create the scatter setting.
- Invisible Settings: Invisible set diamonds are positioned similarly to flush set stones, but they are slightly deeper, creating an impression in the ring’s surface instead of the diamonds creating small bumps.
Any of these types of engagement ring settings can be used to create a distinctive scatter setting.
Choosing Stones for Scatter Settings
Many couples assume that using multiple diamonds immediately increases the ring’s cost, but the determining factor is not the number of stones, but their quality. Because the diamonds are recessed into the ring, lower quality gems can be used without visible detriments – the concealed setting obscures flaws, lower color grades, and other price-reducing characteristics. In addition, the total carat weight of the gems will determine the overall price, as well as the type of precious metal used in the ring’s design.
Some couples even opt to use assorted stones in scatter settings, such as incorporating birthstones into the design for added significance. Synthetic diamonds are another affordable option.
Designs of Scatter Set Diamond Rings
Scatter settings have an astonishing range of designs despite their basic simplicity. Because thin bands do not highlight the “scatter” effect, most scatter rings are thicker bands, highly suitable for men’s engagement rings. Though the only frequently used diamond shape for scattered stones is the classic round, the multiple gems can be arranged in a variety of configurations, including:
- Symmetrically offset scatters with similarly-sized stones in a zigzag pattern.
- In-line gems evenly spaced along the ring’s band but not connected to one another.
- Multi-tone designs with yellow gold bezels set into white gold or platinum bands for contrast.
- Different sized stones scattered in the design, perhaps with one significantly larger gem serving as a focal point similar to traditional ring configurations.
- Diamonds inset into complex metalwork, such as filigree, mokume gane, or Celtic designs.
- Set fully or partially around the ring, similar to partial or full eternity rings.
Additional ring characteristics can be altered as well to create unique designs: milgrain edging, engraving, or using multiple metals can add texture and variety to the ring outside the setting.
Finding Scatter Rings
Scatter set diamond rings can be difficult to find. Like eternity rings, they are difficult to resize and most jewelers only stock a limited variety of scatter designs. Designers are more likely to offer scatter set diamond rings, though many couples will need to resort to online jewelry stores for an adequate selection.
The costs of scatter rings varies widely, based on the number of stones, their quality, the total carat weight, and the complexity of the design. Rarer metals such as platinum or titanium are generally more expensive, and unusual settings or arrangements may also cost more than plainer variations.
Caring for Scatter Settings
Because the individual settings are heavily recessed, scatter set rings are generally more durable than flashier designs. When purchasing the ring, however, be sure to examine each stone to be sure it is securely set and even in the band. Scatter settings can be cleaned just like any diamond band, though a soft brush may be necessary to remove buildup from deep recesses.
Scatter set diamond rings are elegant engagement designs that give traditional simplicity modern flair. With many variations possible for customization, couples can easily find scatter rings suitable for their budget and style.
