Diamond Earrings
From LoveToKnow EngagementRings
While an engagement ring is the classic symbol of love and commitment, diamond earrings are a stylish and beautiful accompaniment that many brides-to-be choose to wear on their wedding day. Diamond earrings come in a wide array of styles and sizes, and it is easy to find the perfect pair to suit any woman’s fashion preferences.
Styles of Diamond Earrings
Just like different engagement ring designs, diamond earrings come in a wide range of styles. The most popular are simple diamond studs, also called diamond solitaire earrings. They range from one-quarter carat to over two carat total weights – the total of both earrings, not per ear, and can be found in both yellow gold and white gold, as well as many elaborate multi-tone styles. Popular designs include:
- Figural dangle diamond earrings, such as flowers, hearts, and butterflies
- Oval or round full hoops, with diamonds around the entire circumference
- Partial hoops, where the diamonds are only arrayed along the front edge of the earrings
- Bar or threaded earrings that dangle gems in a stunning line
- Abstract shapes such as metal twists, knots, teardrops, swirls, or clusters
- Chandelier earrings with diamonds arranged in intricate patterns wider at the bottom and dangling beneath the ear
Diamond earring settings vary depending on the style of the jewelry. If a lot of metal is used, a channel setting may be possible, while prong settings are the most popular and most secure. Pave settings are used for some exquisite designs, and many types of hoop earrings are designed to resemble eternity rings.
Diamond shapes also vary according to the earring design, though round and princess shapes are by far the most popular. Some elaborate designs may mix different shapes, particularly using emerald or baguette shapes as accents.
Many diamond earrings also use colored gems such as rubies, sapphires, or emeralds as brilliant accents, or the diamonds themselves may be accents to more colorful earrings using semi precious gems.
Security of Diamond Earrings
No woman wants to lose jewelry, but unfortunately earrings are easily dislodged and can be lost quite easily, particularly if the woman has long hair that may become tangled in larger earrings. High quality diamond earrings, particularly those with large total carat weights, often come with screw on backs rather than the more common pressure backs for additional security. Hoop earrings may have hinged backs, where the front of the earring is actually attached directly to the back without additional hardware or pieces that can become loose. To protect diamond earrings, never wear them while fixing elaborate hairstyles (the chemicals used in such styles may also dull the earrings), and remove them in windy conditions where strands of hair could inadvertently tug on the earrings. If the earrings are hook styles, continue to use a sturdy back even though the earrings are naturally harder to remove.
Diamond Earring Cost
The price of diamond earrings varies as much as engagement ring prices. Depending on the quality of the stones, the intricacy of the earring, the total carat weight, and the type of metal, diamond earrings can range from approximately $100 to several thousand dollars. Many couples will choose moissanite or cubic zirconia as more affordable gem options. Styles using more metal and fewer gems are also less expensive.
When to Give Diamond Earrings
While the timing of presenting an engagement ring is obvious, many people are unsure about when to give diamond earrings as an appropriate gift. They may be suitable birthday or holiday gifts, or can be given from the groom to the bride as a wedding gift, in the hopes that she will wear them on the couple’s special day. Parents, siblings, or close friends may also present the bride with suitable diamond earrings as a congratulatory gift for her wedding. In fact, many diamond earrings are designed to match engagement rings or necklaces, and would make a lovely, matched set to wear. Many husbands choose to give diamond earrings as anniversary presents, particularly if the number of stones matches the anniversary.
Caring for Diamond Earrings
Diamond earrings must be cared for as meticulously as an engagement ring. They should be stored in a soft case, preferably apart from other jewelry so they can be distinguished easily and will not be damaged by other pieces. Because diamond earrings are more delicate than engagement rings, they should be cleaned professionally, but will not require as frequent of cleaning as rings. Very valuable diamond earrings should be properly appraised and possibly insured as further protection.
