Creative Marriage Proposals

From LoveToKnow EngagementRings

For many people, the traditional on bended knee proposal is tame and predictable, and they prefer more creative marriage proposals. From wacky to trendy, a creative proposal can be the start of a unique and extraordinary relationship.

Traditional proposals aren't for everyone.

What Makes a Proposal Creative

Every marriage proposal includes three key elements – the setting, the question, and the ring. The key to creative marriage proposals is to be unexpected in at least one, but preferably several of those factors. A very unique engagement ring coupled with a traditional setting and standard “will you marry me” does not constitute a creative proposal, but choosing an outrageous setting or cryptic question can revitalize the event. The basic definition of creativity for each element is as follows:

  • The Setting: The setting should be a surprise to the bride-to-be, and she should not be able to anticipate the forthcoming question. This may mean finding a completely unique location, a sentimental place that is unassociated with traditional proposals, or choosing a time or date at the setting that adds an element of surprise.
  • The Question: Rather than getting down on one knee and asking a simple question, a more creative approach may be to ask a series of questions in a quiz or survey format leading to the proposal. Romantic speeches about love and commitment are common – consider a speech about mid-life crises, distant anniversaries, or humorous aspects of marriage instead. The question may also be asked in an unusual format, such as on a billboard, via a co-conspirator, or as a word game.
  • The Ring: As soon as it is unveiled, the engagement ring will become the center of attention, and an unusual ring may help make the proposal more creative. Even a traditional ring can be made more astonishing by presenting it in a unique way: as a gift, hidden in a flower, or otherwise outside the commonplace velvet ring box.

When planning creative marriage proposals, it is vital to remember that not every element needs to be creative in order for the event to be memorable and unique. The impact of careful planning will be far greater if one or two elements are meticulously arranged rather than a hodge-podge of random ideas simply for the sake of creativity.

Ideas for Creative Marriage Proposals

An unusual proposal is one that is unique for the couple, even if it may seem ordinary or bland to others. The best proposals are planned with as much attention to detail as selecting the engagement ring, because they take into account the personalities of the individuals involved as well as their expectations for this momentous occasion.

Hobbies

Proposing makes a roller coaster even more exciting.
Proposing makes a roller coaster even more exciting.

Different hobbies easily lend themselves to creative marriage proposals, such as:

  • Sporting Events: Use the scoreboard at a game, have the question announced over the public address system, or enlist a player to help pop the question.
  • Travel: Propose at a memorable location during a vacation or getaway, or plan a short vacation explicitly for the proposal.
  • Reading or Books: Place a card or note in a favorite book (one that is currently being read), or customize a bookmark with the question.
  • Gardening: Bury the ring (in a protective box) in a favorite gardening spot, attach the ring to flowers, or use a gardening analogy when proposing.
  • Collecting: No matter what the collection, an engagement ring can easily be “added” to the items and subtle guidance will guarantee it is found at the appropriate moment.
  • Scrapbooking: Create a specialized scrapbook page to pop the question, possibly with the ring attached.
  • Interactive Hobbies: Ask the question during the activity – on a roller coaster, while skiing or golfing, during a romantic movie scene, underwater while snorkeling, etc.

Enlisting Help

Some creative proposals require extra help, and enlisting accomplices can truly make the event a surprise. Some ideas for co-conspirators include:

  • Coworkers to deliver flowers, emails, or packages.
  • Singing telegrams or local glee clubs.
  • Family members, neighbors, or friends to stage false settings or events.
  • Waiters or chefs at favorite restaurants.
  • Strangers (to the other person) to serve as “extras” in a creative setting.

Recreations

Creative marriage proposals can actually be recreations of significant or sentimental events, either drawing on the couple’s personal history or the hobbies they enjoy together, such as:

  • A first date or first kiss venue, including time of day, date, food, clothes, etc.
  • Staging a recreation from a favorite movie scene, possibly including a replica of a favorite celebrity’s engagement ring.
  • Historic recreations, such as a parents’ engagement or in the same location as an admired historical figure.
  • Fantasy recreations, such as a prince and princess venue, Halloween proposal, or other fictional alternative.

Warnings About Creative Marriage Proposals

Before popping the question in the most creative way possible, it is vital to consider the bride-to-be and whether or not a staged event or over-the-top proposal is likely to appeal to her sense of romance and what she envisions as the perfect proposal. A woman who treasures tradition and hopes to have solemn, dignified wedding would not appreciate a wacky proposal, whereas a traditional woman who values spontaneity and uniqueness may enjoy an outrageous event. Creative marriage proposals must be judged very carefully, because if the woman’s dreams and desires are disregarded for this most important question, she may question whether the potential groom really knows her and whether she really knows him. Done properly, however, a creative proposal can be an exciting and memorable moment in a couple’s relationship as they begin a new phase of their life together.

Hisham - There are several things you can do to create a surprise proposal with a lovely ring. First, you can consider a "temporary" ring that is just a solitaire, and then you and your special lady can go together to pick out a more elaborate setting to reset that diamond. You could also take her shopping and just note what types of jewelry she prefers -- does she wear yellow or white gold? Does she like classic styles or more exotic designs? These can give you good clues about what to choose for her. You can also consider proposing without an engagement ring so she will have the opportunity to choose her own and that special moment you share won't focus on a piece of jewelry. Best wishes!
