Chocolate Diamond Ring
From LoveToKnow EngagementRings
Diamonds and chocolate are a romantic combination and even better when combined in a chocolate diamond ring.
What is a Chocolate Diamond?
While over 200 different colors of diamonds have been identified, the favorite of many is the rare chocolate diamond. It is a brownish colored diamond that occurs in 0.1% of the stones mined. When the nitrogen atoms are evenly spaced throughout the stone the color will vary from yellow, or canary, to brown, or chocolate. These atoms absorb green and blue light from the spectrum which gives the diamonds their rich color. The actual tint is determined by the concentration of the atoms in the carbon lattice within the stone itself.
Colored diamonds should not be confused with colored gemstones. Diamonds are made up of carbon, while other colored stones are made of other materials. Only a carbon based stone can be called a diamond no matter what color it is.
With new technology colorless diamonds and even synthetics can be forced to mimic chocolate diamonds. Some companies take a low grade, natural diamond and expose it to radiation. This changes the atoms within the stone and causes a change in color. These treated diamonds are less expensive than natural colored diamonds. That may seem like a good thing but they have very little resale value.
These stones are a poor imitation of the rare, exceptional stone it attempts to look like. Naturally colored diamonds are created in nature, each one as unique and individual as the person who will eventually wear it.
Where to Buy Chocolate Diamond Rings
Many jewelers carry colored diamond rings. It is important to buy from an experienced jeweler that can be trusted. Since the chocolate diamonds can be manufactured it is important to work with someone that you can trust. Always be sure to get the proper certification from the seller. It should contain the area of origin of the stone as well as whether the stone was naturally colored or treated.
