Trends in Certified Diamond Wedding Rings
Recently, it has become popular for the bride to wear one band with diamonds set into it. This band takes the place of the engagement ring and wedding band combination. Often the ring will have a larger center diamond flanked by two smaller stones. It may be very wide or ornate. These are sometimes called three stone rings or anniversary rings, or just diamond wedding rings depending on the relative sizes and arrangements of stones.
When the diamond is the focal point of the wedding ring its shape becomes very important. Choosing a cut to compliment the band and the bride’s hand can be confusing. Look at many loose diamonds as well as set stones to see how the cut and setting change the look of the diamond.
Diamond Shapes
- The Round-brilliant continues to be the most popular cut of diamond. This shape has a full 57 facets and is the fieriest of all of the shapes.
- The Radiant cut is in the shape of a rectangle. It has rounded corners and the facets are cut to give this diamond the appearance of cracked ice.
- The Princess cut is a square cut diamond. It has 90 degree angles on each corner. It is the most brilliant diamond cut next to round. The princess cut is a growing trend in certified diamond wedding rings.
- Emerald cuts can be found in either a rectangular or square shape. It will have beveled corners and step-cut facets. This is an elegant choice for a stone.
- The Cushion cut diamond is an antique cut. The facets are larger and because of the way it is cut it is especially beautiful under candlelight.
- The Asscher cut diamond is often called the square emerald cut. The corners are deeply cropped which gives it a stylish, striking look. It is a vintage cut, designed in 1902 by the Asscher Brothers of Holland.
- While the Pear shape is a beautiful cut for earrings or a pendant it is not at its best as a ring. It is sometimes used in wedding rings and ultimately the choice is yours. It is a teardrop shape with beautiful proportions.
- The Marquis cut was inspired by the smile of the Marquise de Pompadour and created for France's Louis XIV. It contains 56 facets and elongated ends. Depending on how it is cut there may be a bow tie visible in the stone.
- The Heart shaped diamond is a very romantic cut. It can be hard to find but is a wonderful addition to wedding rings.
- The Oval cut is similar to a Round Brilliant. It has an elliptical shape that looks good on longer fingers. The cut was invented in the 1960s.
- The Trillion or Trilliant cut is a wedge shaped diamond with three corners. The corners can be either pointed or rounded, depending on the cutter’s preference. It adds a contemporary look to the wedding ring.
Trends in Metals
Like anything else there are trends in the types of metals used in wedding rings. The latest trend has been toward white metals like platinum or white gold.
Platinum is the hottest in trend in metal choices because the rich luster of the platinum wedding rings brings out the fire of the diamonds and creates a beautiful ring. Platinum maintains its color forever and will not yellow or tarnish like some of the other white metals. It is twice as heavy as white gold.
Men are choosing heavy rings with a modern look, often crafted from stainless steel, titanium, or tungsten. Small diamonds set into the band are a hot trend. The diamonds are not just white, either. Many men are choosing to express their sense of style with colored diamonds in their wedding rings.
Women are more likely to choose delicate, vintage inspired looks in their rings. They, as a whole, are choosing more traditionally colored diamonds set in intricate platinum settings.
