Aquamarine Engagement Rings

From LoveToKnow EngagementRings

For a ring reminiscient of the sea, consider an aquamarine engagement ring. Colored gemstone engagement rings are increasing in popularity, and one of the most sought after choices is a quality aquamarine. If you are craving a unique blue-hued stone, but you don't want a sapphire, this lighter option is a stunning alternative.

What is an Aquamarine Engagement Ring?

Aquamarine is a naturally occurring gemstone of the beryl family, closely related to the emerald. Derived from Latin, its name shows its connection to the water: aqua (water) and mare (sea). Because of its lighter blue and sea-blue tones, aquamarine stones are thought to be mermaids’ treasure and particularly lucky for sailors. It is one choice of birthstone for both March and October, and is also a symbolic gift for the nineteenth wedding anniversary.

The majority of the world’s aquamarines originate in Brazil. Other producers include Nigeria, Zambia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.

Color

One of the most important points to consider when purchasing an aquamarine is the coloring of the stone. Trace amounts of iron are responsible for its blue hues, which can range from a light sky blue to a deep sea blue with hints of green. The more intense the color the more valuable the stone, and a pure, clear blue is the most prized shade. Aquamarines with greenish or yellowish tints are generally less valuable but may be beautiful and economical choices for couples with strict budgets.

It is difficult to find a quality aquamarine in a small stone; stones must usually be larger to hold deeper color saturation.

Clarity

Aquamarines are well-known for their virtually flawless appearance. The stone you choose should be uniform in color, transparent, and flawless, though some inclusions can be incorporated into the cut of the stone to achieve a charming, unique effect without detracting too significantly from its value. Because the most common shade is a very light blue, inclusions are easy to identify, and you can and should ask to use your jeweler’s magnifying loupe to inspect the stone.

As you examine each stone, be sure you look at it in several different forms of light, paying particular attention to any dark patches within the stone or cracks that could indicate serious flaws.

Treatments

Virtually all aquamarines have been heat-treated, and this should not detract from the value of the stone. When aquamarines are first mined, they will actually have a green or pale yellow hue, but the heat treatment brings out the brilliant blue tones that consumers desire. Be sure you ask the jeweler what type of treatment your stone has undergone, and have that put into writing.

Cuts

Aquamarines can be cut in a variety of shapes to fit individual tastes. Some of the most common cuts include emerald and oval shapes. Keep in mind that larger stones will typically have much better color and clarity, so it is always a good idea to purchase the stone as loose and add the setting to it, allowing you to thoroughly inspect it without the setting hiding potential flaws or problems.

Aquamarine Engagement Ring Settings

Just like diamond engagement rings, aquamarines can be set in a variety of different ways. It is common for an aquamarine to be flanked by diamond accent stones to accentuate its clarity and transparency, and white gold is a popular metal choice. However, each ring can be customized to suit the wearer’s preferences, requirements, and budget.

For couples with connections to the sea, or a yearning for a unique stone, aquamarine engagement rings are an excellent choice. With its distinctive light blue hue and startling transparency, aquamarine makes a beautiful alternative to traditional gemstone choices.
